Captain Mario D. Colatarci, 86, died at his home in Boca Raton, Fla., September 9. He was born in Paterson, N.J., August 4, 1920, the oldest of six children.
His wife of 22 years, Rose; three children, Roberta Leddy of Sandy Hook, Michael Colatarci of Aiken, S.C., and Salvatore Colatarci of Mexico, as well as their spouses; a brother, Alfred; and a sister, Florence, survive him. He was the proud grandfather of Michael, Veronica, and Sara Leddy, Maria, Robert and Joseph Colatarci, and Peter and Stephen Colatarci; and great-granddaughter, Ashley Colatarci. He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Mary Micciancio Colatarci.
A true hero, Capt Colatarci was recognized for his valor by receiving the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Clusters, Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge, and European African Medal for his contributions in major campaigns in Normandy, northern France, and Rhineland during World War II. He continued to risk his life for others on a daily basis by serving as a professional firefighter in Paterson, N.J., retiring after more than 30 years with the rank of captain. Capt Colatarci was one of only three recipients of the Paterson Mayorâs Medal of Hheroism, recognizing his exceptional character.
Capt Colatarci remained active in his retirement in charitable and fraternal organizations as a member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and 28 IN Reg, 8th Division.
He enjoyed playing golf during his 30 years in Florida. He traveled extensively over the years with many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St Joan of Arc Church, Boca Raton. A graveside memorial service and burial is scheduled for Saturday, October 21, at 11 am, at Resurrection Cemetery, Newtown.
