Safe Halloween Fun, One Weekend Early

DANBURY – Entertaining, quality events for families are always taking place throughout downtown Danbury and the festivities planned for this Halloween are no exception.

“Halloween is one of the most popular traditions children look forward to year after year,” notes Nancy Whitfield, the executive director of CityCenter Danbury Special Service District. “The ‘trick’ is for parents to find Halloween ‘treats’ for their kids that are fun and safe.” Fortunately for parents, downtown Danbury organizations will again host a number of children’s activities for a full day of fun on Saturday, October 23.

Families can start their Halloween adventure with a session of “Spooky Stories, Treats & Crafts” at Danbury Public Library (call 797-4505) from 12:30 to 2 pm that will feature creatively costumed storytellers, lots of candy and fun crafts.

Kids can then walk just two blocks over to “Halloween on the Green” from 2 pm to 4 pm. This annual tradition of family fun is sponsored by CityCenter Danbury (792-1711), the Danbury Jaycees and Danbury Kiwanis. Children are invited to participate in a costume parade, enjoy magicians, face painting, goodie bags and have photos taken with their favorite ghost, ghoul or goblin.

Prizes will be given for the most original, scariest, and funniest costumes. New this year is “Halloween Happening Music with John Fogarty,” which will be performed live at the CityCenter Bandshell. Admission is free.

After dinner at any of the restaurants within the immediate area, parents can take the family for a short stroll over to Danbury Railway Museum (778-8337), at 120 White Street, to walk through the very spooky “Haunted Rail Yard.” Families can end their Halloween family fun day by taking a ride on the museum’s “Haunted Train,” all starting at 7 pm.

Parking for the day is only $2 for anyone using Patriot Parking Garage, conveniently located adjacent to the Danbury Green, on Patriot Drive.
