Garner Supports Youth League

Garner Correctional Institution Warden Giovanny Gomez and Garner Recreation Supervisor Carl Ruegg have presented an $800 check to the Naugatuck Junior Football League.

The league was chosen as the recipient due its outstanding reputation, according to Mr Ruegg. The funds will be used to purchase uniforms and equipment.

The money was raised through the prison recreation department’s inmate photo program. Inmates pay to have a photo taken to send to their families as a way to maintain family ties.

In the past several years, Garner has presented such funds to the Newtown Parks and Recreation Campership Program; the North End Middle School in Waterbury for computers and cheerleader jackets; and the Anderson Boys Club in Waterbury for its summer camp program. The recreation department also has donated fishing lures and wooden craft items to Paul Newman’s Hole-in-the-Wall Gang Camp for terminally ill children.

“It is very satisfying to be able to give back to citizens who give us support,” said Warden Gomez.
