To the Editor:

I recently attended an event in Connecticut where there were a couple of former elected officials. We got talking about our experiences … The one reoccurring theme was that “times have changed,” and there is much more contention.

Those of us who had success at getting things done agreed we did so because we collaborated and established positive relationships with “the other side.”

I believe Neil Chaudhary is a person with similar perspective, willing to work with all people … listen to all people … and an effective communicator and creative problem solver.

He is the person Newtown needs on its Police Commission at this time. Neil’s accomplishments are vast and I am sure have been highlighted over these weeks.

You may know Neil’s work in town but his contributions at the state level are less known.

As a former state legislator for Newtown, I remember the tragedies that led to the passage of our teen driver laws — Neil’s data and input in the committee assembled by Governor Jodie Rell to combat the death and injuries of our youngest drivers was instrumental in allowing us to pass laws based on sound data and not knee-jerk reactions that lack scientific support.

He has given presentations to educate nearly every law enforcement agency in Connecticut during the Law Enforcement summits. I know too, that he has shared his talents nationally.

The fact that Newtown has someone like Neil working as a volunteer is truly a gift.
