C. H. Booth Library Cards Hold Access To ‘The World's Finest Cinema’
C.H. Booth Library announced a new streaming program for its patrons through an e-mail announcement on September 25: “The world’s finest cinema now streaming with your library card,” the e-mail read.
Information Technology Librarian Olivia Scully explained on October 3 that the Kanopy streaming service was recently added to the library’s already robust online options.
“We want to make sure we are reaching everyone,” said Ms Scully.
She added that the library’s range of services are available to all of its patrons and community members who have a library card.
Kanopy offers movies, documentaries, and foreign movies. As of October 10, new movies listed on Kanopy included Aquarius, Wreckers, Nancy, Horses of God, My Afternoons with Margueritte, and Zero Motivation.
Ms Scully said Kanopy is celebrating the month of October with a German film promotion. For the entire month, classic German films are available. Ms Scully was looking forward to rewatching Metropolis. She demonstrated how quickly she could browse the offerings on her phone’s Kanopy app and on her laptop’s internet browser to show the range of availability. All of the films are available to watch on any device with internet.
Reading a report offered by Kanopy, Ms Scully said the top ten most popular movies on Kanopy in September were Loving Vincent; Charade; Howard Zinn: A People’s History Of The US; Ordinary People; and Strange and Familiar: Architecture on Fogo Island.
Ms Scully explained Kanopy is the latest addition to the library’s streaming and online services, which include Mango, Muzzy, RBDigial (formerly called OneClick Digital), Hoopla, and Overdrive, which has an app called Libby.
“All these different services offer all kinds of media content,” said Ms Scully.
For those looking for music or videos, Ms Scully suggested searching Kanopy or Hoopla.
According to the library’s website, chboothlibrary.org, Hoopla offers movies, television shows, music albums, audiobooks, e-books, and comics/graphic novels. OverDrive offers e-books and audiobooks to download on a wide variety of devices, and people with a library card can check items out using the Libby app, the library’s website, or the library’s catalog. RBDigital also has e-books and audiobooks to download on a wide variety of devices, and access to the RBDigital catalog is available through the library’s website or downloadable on the RBDigital app.
Mango offers language tutorials for adults, and Muzzy offers language tutorials for children. Along with its tutorials, Ms Scully said Mango offers movies, which creates “a nice, immersive” language learning experience.
“Hoopla is really good for music,” said Ms Scully, with her phone in hand.
To access all of the library’s available digital content, visit the website; under the “digital resources” tab, choose either “downloadable media” or “language tutorials.”
“That’s going to get you to all of this fun content,” Ms Scully said, adding that all library patrons need is their C.H. Booth Library card to access the digital media. She also said some programs may ask patrons to create a login and password.
More information about all of the library’s programs is available on its website.
