Swimmers Fall To Panthers In Close Meet And Beat Stratford
Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team dropped a close meet to the visiting Pomperaug of Southbury Panthers, 95-91, on October 6. The Nighthawks went on the road and topped Stratford 94-64 on October 10.
Results from the Pomperaug meet are as follows:
Newtown's 200 yard medley relay team of Mary Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Caroline Mahoney was first in a time of 1:57.12, edging Pomperaug's fastest relay by a little more than a second.
Julia DiMartino placed second in the 200 free with a time of 2:17.43.
Carter was runner-up in the 200 individual medley, making her final touch in 2:23.46, only 37 hundredths of a second off Pomperaug's first-place time.
Kiera Sughrue won the diving competition with a score of 213.9, and Hannah Weatherby was second with a score of 195.4.
Hufziger won the 100 free, sprinting to the finish in 55.35.
The 200 free relay contingent of Emma Riebe, Renkert, Lillian Perazzo, and Carter was second in 1:51.23, just 22 hundredths of a second behind Pomperaug's winning time.
Hufziger won the 100 backstroke race in 1:02.62.
Carter was first in the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:14.61.
The 400 free relay team of DiMartino, Mahoney, Emma Riebe, and Hufziger was first in 3:56.55, only 11 hundredths of a second better than Pomperaug's best time.
