Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Bakers Wanted! A bake sale will be on the third Monday of the month from 9 to 10 am. Bring donations of baked goods in before that time.

*Flu shots are available every Tuesday, October 16, 23, and 29, from 9 am to noon. Proof of insurance must be presented. No appointment necessary.

*Work on crafts for the holiday bazaar on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 and 2 to 3 pm.

*Test your luck at bingo on Wednesdays, October 17 at 1 pm

 

Upcoming Programs

*Test your luck at bingo on Wednesday, October 31, at 1 pm.

*Halloween costume party will follow bingo on October 31. Wear a costume or borrow one from the Senior Center. Enjoy some refreshments. Call to sign up.

*Annual Harvest Bazaar open house preview is Thursday, November 8, 5 to 7 pm. Regular hours are November 9, 9 am to 5 pm; November 10, 9 am to 4 pm; and November 11, 9 am to noon. Come do some early holiday shopping. Included will be afghans, quilts, hats, mittens, scarves, jewelry, holiday ornaments and decorations, baked goods, and an array of other goodies.

*“Stress Management for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” program, sponsored by Bethel Health Care, will be given by Diane Johnson, RN, director of nurses, for part-time or full-time caregivers of their grandchildren on Thursday, November 15, at 1 pm.

 

Day Trips

*The Inn at Villa Bianca’s annual Halloween Bash is Wednesday, October 24, 10:30 am to 2 pm. All you can eat family-style luncheon and entertainment for $29.95. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Mohegan Sun Casino trip on Wednesday, November 1, that includes transportation, $15 meal coupon and two $10 fee bets. Cost is $30; depart at 8 am.

*Enjoy Thanksgiving at Mt Haven Resort on Wednesday, November 7. First a full country breakfast, then bingo or movies, music, comedy and singing, followed by a turkey dinner buffet with all the trimmings and a four-hour open bar. Cost is $78.

*The Inn at Villa Bianca’s annual Thanksgiving celebration is Wednesday, November 16, 10:30 am to 2 pm. All you can eat family-style luncheon and entertainment for $29.95. The van can accommodate 16 and will depart at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool.

*Depart on Thursday, December 6, for the Huke Lau in Chicopee, Mass. Christmas songs and traditional Hawaiian Christmas dances by Polynesian dancers will be performed during the luncheon. After the show depart to the Christmas Tree Shop and then to Springfield for the lighting display at “Bright Night” at Forest Park. Cost is $71.

*Mark the calendar. Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 11, 11 am to 3 pm, at Capellaro’s. On the agenda is a gourmet buffet, 50/50 raffle and regular raffles, and music by Vinnie Carr. Cost is $30. Call for reservations now.

Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; 10:30, Crafts for the Bazaar; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, line dance/ballroom dancing; 2:15 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga; 1:30 Wii bowling; 3 pm Polynesian/Hawaiian dance lessons.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10:30 am, exercise or quilting or sewing; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

October 15–19

Monday: Grape juice, beef stew, diced potatoes, cucumber & onion salad, rye bread, topped peach crumble.

Tuesday: Baked knockwurst, mustard, egg noodles, sweet and sour cabbage with diced apples, whole oat bread, fresh orange.

Wednesday: Apple juice, cheese lasagna, marinara sauce, garden salad, vinaigrette dressing, Italian bread, rainbow sherbet.

Thursday: Roast turkey with turkey gravy, mashed potatoes, winter blend vegetables, 7-grain bread, plums.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, October 22: Pineapple juice, BBQ riblets, harvest vegetable rice, spinach greens, corn muffin, cinnamon applesauce.

Tuesday, October 23: Baked chicken with honey mustard sauce, potato salad, peas & carrots, multigrain bread, pineapple chunks.
