Reliving Civil War History

Through Folklore

NAUGATUCK —  Naugatuck Historical Society’s Civil War Series continues with a program by the writer and storyteller Joseph J. Patchen on Sunday, October 14.

Mr Patchen has written a series of tales that are based on folklore that originated during the American Civil War. From the dark beauty of a Southern newlywed roaming field hospitals in search of her lost love to Beelzebub the peddler, the stories come to life in Mr Patchen’s programs, which are rooted in, inspired by, and remain true to the myths of Northerners and Southerners.

Audiences need only enjoy a good tale. Prior knowledge is not necessary, as Mr Patchen provides a synopsis of the original folklore before reading his story. An assistant reader may read with Mr Patchen to enhance the experience of certain tales.

Programs usually run one hour to 75 minutes, and include five tales followed by a discussion period.

All are welcome. A short annual meeting and lunch will precede the presentation.

Tickets are $15 ($12 for members), available by calling 203-729-9039, or sending e-mail to NaugatuckHisgtory@sbcglobal.net, and at the door.

Naugatuck Historical Society is at 195 Water Street, at the Metro North stop.
