Newtown High School Career Center Announces Scholarships Available For Students

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarship. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center (www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP); the National Fraud Information Center (www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060); or the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100).

Spirit of Innovation Challenge — This annual competition provides an opportunity for teams of students worldwide to create commercially viable products or services to address issues of global sustainability for the benefit of humanity. The Spirit of Innovation Challenge offers teachers, parents and afterschool coordinators a relevant and dynamic way to teach science, technology, engineering and math. Teams can be made up of students between 13 and 18 years old from different schools, states and even countries. Create a global team through the online new members’ forum at www.conradawards.com. Along the way, world-renowned scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs are available as virtual mentors to help teams. Submit your one-page abstract online through the submission portal by October 24.

Connecticut Bar Foundation James W. Cooper Fellows Quintin Johnstone Essay Contest — The Connecticut Bar Foundation sponsors a writing contest open to all high school students throughout the state of Connecticut. The 2012–2013 essay topic is: “Prescription for Success?” Entries from each school/homeschooler must be submitted to the Connecticut Bar Foundation in Hartford, postmarked no later than March 1. Essays will be judged by federal and state court judges, law professors and lawyers. Log on to the website www.ctbarfdn.org for guidelines. The winning students, school contest coordinators and principals will receive awards which will be presented at a ceremony presided over by Connecticut Supreme Court Justices at the Connecticut Supreme Court. The contest winner will receive $2,000 and the two runners-up will receive $1,000.

Big Y Scholarships — Big Y Foods, Inc, one of the largest family-owned supermarkets in Southern New England, annually awards more than 300 scholarships totaling more than $250,000 to high school seniors, undergraduates, graduates, community college and nontraditional students (students not of traditional college age.) All scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement and are awarded to the most outstanding students in the Big Y market area. Applications are available in the Career Center file or refer to the scholarship section of the website for more applications and information, www.bigy.com. The application must be complete and all supporting documents must be postmarked by February 1.

CHSCA Scholarships — The Connecticut High School Coaches Association (CHSCA) will be awarding six $1,000 scholarships to three male and three female graduating high school seniors from across Connecticut. Seniors are eligible to apply if they have earned at least one varsity athletic letter, have achieved a minimum 3.0 academic average and have demonstrated exemplary citizenship and leadership. Newtown High School may nominate one male and one female to participate in the final selection process for the scholarship awards. Only one athlete will be selected from each school. All applicants who would like to be considered for nomination must return the completed three-page Scholar Athlete Nomination Form to Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by January 8. Nomination forms are available in the Career Center file. Please refer to Naviance under “description” for additional details. Scholarship winners must be in attendance at the recognition dinner on May 9 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.

Youth Activity Fund Student Grants — Youth Activity Fund for high school students and college undergraduates fosters a new generation of explorers dedicated to the advancement of scientific knowledge of the world. The Explorers Club offers grants to students conducting individual scientific or exploration research projects through their respective schools with a supervising instructor. Awards typically range from $500 to $5,000 in each fund. All required documents must be submitted at one time, including your letter of support and current student ID or proof of enrollment. The deadline for receiving 2013 applications is November 1 and awards will be issued in April.

Healthy Lifestyles Scholarship — To apply for the Healthy Lifestyles $5,000 scholarship submit your responses to two essay questions, “why is a healthy lifestyle important in school?” and also discuss your career plans, goals and personal ambitions. Please write your scholarship essay in Microsoft Word or, if you do not have Microsoft Word, in Google office, the latter is free to use on the Internet. After you are finished the writing process, please attach it to an email and send it to: studentaward@fitnessexercises.tv. If you have any questions or concerns, please forward them to Linda Wells (linda.wells@fitnessexercises.tv). The deadline for submission is December 15 by 5 pm .

NFIB Young Entrepreneur Award — Applicants for the Young Entrepreneur Awards should demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit and initiative evident by establishing and running their own business. Participation is encouraged in organizations such as DECA, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) or Junior Achievement, among others; or through other initiatives. There are a minimum of 100 scholarships including nonrenewable and renewable awards ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. The selection committee will consider academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership and entrepreneurial endeavors. NFIB recommends that students fully read all the application instructions and the frequently asked questions before beginning the online application which is due by December 17. Ronald McDonald House Chapter Scholarships — Ronald McDonald House Charities Global and the local chapter in Fairfield County are sponsoring four scholarships: RMHS Scholars, RMHS African American, RMHS Asia, and RMHS Hacer. Students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership and community involvement are eligible to apply. Applicants must be current high school seniors planning to attend a two- or four-year college or university full-time. Complete an online application on www.rmhc.org by December 20.

Bennington Young Writers Award — Bennington College sponsors the Young Writers Awards to recognize outstanding writing achievement by high school students across the country. Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible to submit one of the following: poetry, fiction story/play or nonfiction essay. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher. Application details and the submission form are available online at www.bennington.edu. The deadline for entries is November 1.

SAE Engineering Scholarships — The Society of Automotive Engineers offers multiple scholarships to high school seniors intending to earn a degree in engineering or related science. Applicants must be US citizens and meet minimum requirements for grade point average and SAT and/or ACT scores. Apply online at http://students.sae.org/awdscholar/scholarships by December 15.
