Dr Nancy M. Cappello To Be Honored At Breast Cancer Luncheon

BRIDGEPORT — St Vincent’s SWIM Across the Sound will host its 17th Annual Breast Cancer Luncheon on October 19, at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport. The event will begin with a silent auction at 10 am, followed by a champagne lunch at noon.

The luncheon is proud to honor Connecticut resident Nancy M. Cappello, PhD, president and founder of Are You Dense, Inc. Dr Cappello is a tireless advocate of whole breast ultrasound screening as a supplement to the mammogram for women with dense breast tissue.

Her dedication led to the passing of two bills through the Connecticut legislature: one ensures that insurance companies cover whole breast ultrasound screening as a supplement to the mammogram for women with dense breast tissue and another standardizes the communication of breast density to women through the mammography report.

Her efforts were recognized with a citation by the General Assembly as well as the Cancer Society’s “Angel Award.” Are You Dense.org is dedicated to raising the awareness of women with dense breast tissue leading to the early detection of breast cancer.

Dr Cappello, was instrumental in the first law in the nation to inform women of their breast density stated, “Women with dense breast tissue, who followed all the screening rules, were denied access to early detection for too many years. This legislation will standardize the communication of breast density to women across the country and give them the information they need to discuss their cancer risks and individual surveillance with their health care providers.”

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women and the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women, with one out of eight women facing breast cancer over the course of her life. It is estimated that in 2012, more than more than 229,060 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and almost 40,000 will die from the disease.
