Cross Country Teams Race To Victories

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams traveled to Brookfield on Tuesday and took on the host Bobcats, along with Oxford and Notre Dame-Fairfield. The girls won all three races to improve to 11-4, and the boys fell to Brookfield by three points, but also defeated Oxford and Notre Dame to improve to 12-2.

In the girls’ meet, Newtown defeated Brookfield 15-50, Oxford 20-41, and Notre Dame 15-50. Newtown’s Hannah Schwartz won the race in a time of 20:40, and Brianne Moulder was second in 20:49. NHS took five more spots among the top ten. Laura Hornby came in fourth in 23:22, Sarah Mawdsley was sixth in 23:24, Julia Faxon placed seventh in 23:28, Kelly Coughlin was eighth in a time of 23:33, and Kiera Eklow placed ninth in 23:35.

The boys defeated Notre Dame 15-50 and Oxford 18-42, and fell 29-26 to Brookfield. The Nighthawks again were led by Jake Feinstein who won the race in 16:35. Mitchell Russo was fourth in 17:15, Paul Mangiafico came in fifth in 17:19, Joey Whelan placed tenth in 18:21, Christopher Gamble was 12th in 18:38, and Ethan Burg came in 13th in 18:47.
