The Hawley Family, By Dan Cruson

BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Museum and Historical Society will host a lecture by Newtown Historian Daniel Cruson on “The Hawley Family of Northeast Connecticut” on Wednesday, October 17. The lecture will begin at 7:30 pm and is free of charge.

The program will be at the historical society’s museum, at the intersection of routes 133 and 25.

The talk and slide show will include a discussion on Benjamin Hawley and his descendents of Hawleyville. It will also cover their Brookfield cousins most notably Emily, the antiquarian on Brookfield who wrote the definitive book on the Town’s history, The Annals of Brookfield.

The presentation will end with the tragedy of Mary Hawley, one of Newtown’s most eminent benefactors.

Mr Cruson is a former teacher of history and anthropology at Joel Barlow High School in Redding. In addition to serving as Newtown’s Town Historian he is also president of the Archaeological Society of Connecticut.

Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
