Newtown High School's field hockey team remained undefeated and handed host Pomperaug of Southbury its first loss in a 4-1 triumph on October 10.

The Nighthawks struck for a 1-0 lead early the contest when Izzy Butler was set up by Katie Goyda.

Pomperaug's defense tightened and its offense generated some chances throughout the rest of the first half. The score remained 1-0 Newtown heading into the break, and stayed that way deep into the second half.

Newtown went ahead 2-0 on a goal by Goyda and answered Pomperaug's tally with two more Goyda cage-finders.

Katie Dirga, Kat Trammel, and Butler all had assists.

The Nighthawks improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in South-West Conference action. The Panthers fell to 6-1-1 (4-1-0 in the SWC).

Newtown had dominated in most of its first ten games, averaging just under six goals per contest and building big first-half leads consistently.

"It was a different paced game for us for sure," Coach Shannon Paproski said. "The pressure was definitely on."

After Pomperaug's tally, the Nighthawks called timeout.

"We focused on what we wanted to accomplish, we got really fired up, and we got those extra two goals," Paproski said.

Newtown's defensive effort was led by Camryn Griffin, and left midfielder Walsh was solid all around.

"She had the game of her career," Paproski said of Walsh's effort which was key with Pomperaug focusing attention on Goyda and Dirga and marking them closely throughout the tilt.

After hosting FCIAC team Trumbull on Wednesday, October 16 at 6 pm, Newtown visits SWC rival Immaculate of Danbury, which goes into October 12 action still unbeaten, the next afternoon at 4 o'clock.

"It will be a test," said Paproski, a former Immaculate Mustang, who will return to her old high school field hockey stomping grounds.

"This week is a big week for us," Paproski added.
