Remembering The Danbury Fair

BETHEL — Though the last Danbury State Fair was held almost 20 years ago, the once annual attraction is still very much alive in the memories of many people near and far who were able to experience its excitement.

Residents of the greater Danbury area felt a sense of pride in “their” fair to which many personally contributed, whether with livestock, honey, or homemade jellies and jams. The best were rewarded with a blue ribbon. Others will remember such things as the rides, cotton candy, popcorn, games of chance, the Dutch Village, ox drawings, and Miss Rheingold.

To celebrate the memories created by Danbury Fair, Bethel Historical Society will present an exhibition of fair memorabilia from the private collection of Walt Dunlap, including a carousel horse, a Dutch boy, Pixies, and a full sized mustang, among other things. The exhibition will take place on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22, from 1 to 4 pm, at the 1842 Second Meeting House at 40 Main Street in Bethel. For loans, donations, or more information please contact Patricia Rist at 743-5893. Suggested donation is $2 per person.

While Mr Dunlap has agreed to loan much of his collection for the weekend, the historical society is also welcoming loans of memorabilia for the special weekend exhibition from other area residents. Anyone making a loan will receive a Deed of Trust. Contact Mrs Rist to arrange drop-off of items.
