Tony Hwang: Always Present, Always Caring
To The Editor:
I first met State Senator Tony Hwang many years ago at an Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) event in Southport.
My grandfather, Ted Lovely, had long organized events for this Irish-Catholic group, but Tony stood out from the local politicians who would typically just drop by. Tony stayed for the whole event, meeting everyone, thanking the organizers, and even taking time to talk to me, a teenager at the time. He asked about my high school wrestling season and college applications, and generously offered his personal contact information if I ever needed help.
Tony’s presence was not a one-time thing. He regularly attended AOH events, proudly calling himself “Tony O’Hwang” while wearing a green necktie. Every year, he returned to Perry Green and made a tradition of taking my family’s photo at the annual communion breakfast. He always remembered my name, asked about my wrestling, and even continued showing up after my grandfather passed away.
Years later, I ran into Tony again at a benefit for Saint Rose School in Newtown. He remembered my journey through college and law school, and offered to give me a tour of the State Capitol. His personal email address was always open, and he responded promptly and thoughtfully.
Tony’s support has been genuine and unwavering, even before I was a voter or could do anything for him. He connects with people, shows up for them, and listens to their concerns. His involvement in schools, sports teams, and cultural groups, regardless of their background, speaks volumes.
This is the relationship we should expect from our state representatives — someone who cares, who is present, and who listens.
This is why I believe Tony Hwang is the right choice for state senator. He has always been there for our community, and he always will be.
