Alida E. Worobel

Longtime Sandy

Hook Resident

Alida E. Worobel, 65, of Sandy Hook, died October 2 with her family by her side, after courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Bridgeport, September 23, 1943, daughter of Wilbur and Esther (Fogg) Pettit, and was raised in Shelton before living most of her life in Sandy Hook.

In 1958, at age 15, she was awarded the Carnegie Medal by the Carnegie Hero Fund for risking her own life to pull a man out of his flaming truck cab and extinguishing his burning clothes with her coat.

She worked for many years as a hostess alongside her family at Lauretti’s Restaurant in Shelton until her retirement. She was very artistic, enjoyed crocheting, and loved, above all, spending time with her grandchildren.

She was the devoted wife of Andrew Worobel and beloved mother and mother-in-law of Anndee Lauretti and her husband, honorable Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti, and Bret Worobel. She is also survived by four cherished grandchildren, Alexa, Nicholas, Anthony, and Joseph; her twin sister, Anita Lang; her sister, Lynne Long; and her brother, Wilbur Pettit.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 6 at St Margaret Mary Church in Shelton. Interment will be private.
