PAIRPOINT CRYSTAL GLASS HOSTS CAPE COD GLASS CLUB

Ak/gs set 10/10 #715391

SAGAMORE, MASS. — On Tuesday, November 6, the Cape Cod Glass Club will visit Pairpoint Crystal Glass works in Sagamore, within view of the Sagamore Bridge over the Cape Cod Canal. Members and guests will meet in the glass works’ gift shop at 1 pm when owner Tom Fiacco will discuss the company’s prominence in the history of glassmaking. Then he will escort the group to the factory floor to view the furnaces, the process of color selection and the blowing of the beautiful glass for which the company is noted.

The Pairpoint works evolved from the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company that was founded in 1880 for the making of Britannia ware. The firm’s factory was built adjacent to the Mount Washington Glass Company in New Bedford, Mass. It and the Mount Washington firm merged in 1894, and eventually both glass and Britannia were produced under the Pairpoint name.

After several reorganizations, glass blower Robert M. Gundersen took over the company in 1939. The works was moved and ownership reorganized several more times. Robert Bryden opened the Sagamore factory in 1970.

The Cape Cod Glass Club, holds an annual seminar and publishes a scholarly journal that members receive three times yearly. The Cape Cod chapter meets monthly from October to December and from March to June. The club is open to new members.
