Columbus Day Tournament

Nashua, New Hampshire

The falling leaves and the changing colors of the autumn season were the setting for the Nashua Columbus Day Soccer Tournament, New Hampshire.  The Newtown Vipers competed in a U-11 Division I group, which included teams from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Maine.

The Vipers 2-0-1 record in the three preliminary games was not enough to advance onto the finals. The eventual winner, South Shore United (Massachusetts), tied the Vipers in their third match and, with both teams completing the preliminaries with the same record, a tie breaking system that was determined by goal differential went the South Shore’s way.

VIPERS 3, FULLER HAMLETS 0: Although Newtown was a little flat after traveling Friday evening, the 8:00 ammatch ended in a 3-0 win for the Vipers.  Danny Smith recorded the shutout in goal. Paul Andras scored a pair of goals and Kevin Troy added one of his own. Nick Kallivrousis, Drew Taylor and Chris Schreiber all helped pace the midfield while Kevin Davies, Mat DeBrantes and Colin Babbage all strengthened the defense.

VIPERS 1, ORSTA PHANTOMS 0: The ORSTA Phantoms were next for Newtown and, after an earlier loss, the Phantoms played very aggressive and physical.  Jason Smith was dominating at center midfield along with Ethan Canfield, Tony Gallucci, and Zack Varga on the outside flanks. In the 19th minute of the first half, Justin Miller dribbled across the box and to his left and found the far post as the Vipers went up 1-0, but that was all that Newtown could net.  The Vipers went on to shut out the Phantoms but the lack of additional scoring by Newtown, later in the tournament, sealed the fate for the Vipers.  Chris Meier and Troy anchored the defense with Anthony Florez, Alex Bowen and Max Hoagland all fueling the offensive pressure.

VIPERS 2, SOUTH SHORE UNITED 1: The Vipers changed their field assignments and went with a new formation that was meant to contain the United’s scoring power, while hopefully taking advantage of quick offensive attacks from the Vipers.  The Vipers executed the game plan perfectly and even though an early corner kick that the Vipers netted was called back on a questionable call, the Vipers played with confidence and composure. Only a few minutes later with another corner kick awarded to the Vipers, Troy lofted another ball to Andras who found the net and put Newtown on top.  Danny Smith was again quick and alert in the net and held the United scoreless until a PK, just past the outstretched hands of Smith, tied the match.  Meier, Troy, Babbage, DeBrantes and Davies played outstanding on defense and denied South Shore any scoring other than the PK.  With the match tied 1-1, Newtown again rallied for an additional score and with several chances just missing the mark, Newtown was eliminated.
