Snapshot: Stacey Olszewski
Occupation: It’s a little hard to explain all I do. I’m a folk artist, and Old Green Road is my folk art business. I’m also an event promoter through my business, Piper Promotions, and City Center Danbury. I do property management with Nolan Enterprises, as well. I have a lot of angles to what I do, and they are all kind of related.
Family: My husband John and I just celebrated our 25th anniversary. We have three kids, Brian, Daniel, and Megan.
Pets: Piper is my dog. She’s a chocolate Lab, and she keeps me sane. And we have Petey, our cat. I do have chickens, too.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We’ve been here since 1993. We bought an 1847 house in foreclosure that was falling apart, and we’ve rebuilt it.
What do you like to do in your free time? I’m on the board of the Newtown Arts Festival, and on the Newtown Labor Day Parade Committee. We have a boat, so we love to go out on Candlewood Lake. I love going to the Elephant’s Trunk in New Milford. I get a lot of antiques and pieces to paint there and at flea markets. I paint, of course, in my free time. I do like to hike and work in the yard.
Do you have a favorite artist? Rufus Porter. He’s a folk artist from a long time ago. I try to emulate his style.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? North Truro, on Cape Cod. That’s my Zen place. I’ve been going there for 20 years with the family, and pop up once in a while by myself. We’ve stayed in different places there over the years, but lately we’ve been at a place where you can see the Cape Cod Lighthouse, Pilgrim Tower, and the bay, all from the deck. It’s pretty cool.
What is the best thing about Newtown? It’s hard to pick. I like that people are very artistic here. There’s a lot of creativity. I love the General Store, to just go and hang out. There are a lot of wonderful people here.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? My grandmother. I spent a lot of time with her and she was amazing. She was a carpenter, and she was raised in China. Her parents were missionaries there. She met and married my grandfather in Shanghai. He was a Dutch banker. They moved to just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. My grandmother and I would go thrift shopping, canoeing, play tennis. She wasn’t like the usual grandmother. She was a ball girl once for tennis pro Arthur Ashe. Everyone wanted to be around her because she was so much fun.
Did you have a favorite toy, growing up? I had Breyer horses that I played with a lot. And I built a pottery kick wheel when I was in high school, and played with that.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Sitting at the beach. When I get there, I just sit. I don’t read. I just look at the water. That’s probably my guilty pleasure… oh, and I do take naps in the pool.
