An intense storm that passed through the state early on the morning of Wednesday, October 8, resulted in more than ten calls to local volunteer fire companies for utility lines and trees having fallen due to high winds, translating into more than 150 local electric outages at the height of the power failures.

Connecticut Light & Power Company spokesman Mitch Gross said that as of 5 am, CL&P received reports of 149 outages in Newtown. By 7 am, that number had climbed to 154 outages. At 9:30 am, the number had fallen to 87 outages, as utility crews repaired damage done by the storm.

Later that day, virtually all CL&P customers had their power back. CL&P has just over 11,000 customers in Newtown.

Volunteer firefighters were busy with storm-related calls from 4:06 to 6:43 am, responding to 11 calls for service.

Botsford, Hook & Ladder, Hawleyville, and Dodgingtown firefighters responded.

Locations included the intersection of Mile Hill Road South and Turkey Hill Road, Hanover Road, Ridge Road, Scudder Road, Kaechele Drive, Rock Ridge Road, the intersection of Currituck Road and Signal Post Road, and the intersection of Poverty Hollow Road and Hattertown Road, officials said.

Trees and tree limbs fell onto roadways, causing temporary road closures in several areas.

Road closure points included the intersection of Mile Hill Road South and Turkey Hill Road, near 182 Hanover Road, near 4 Kaechele Drive, and the intersection of Poverty Hollow Road and Hattertown Road, officials said.
