Multiple Charges

Police report that at about 9 am on October 5, they responded to a gas station at 47 Church Hill Road where they learned that a fuel theft had occurred in which a man had put approximately $30 worth of fuel into a 1994 Mack truck without paying for that fuel.

An investigation showed that the man allegedly stole that truck from Center Street in the Riverside section of Sandy Hook, where it had been stored for an adjacent bridge construction project on Interstate 84, police said.

Police said they charged Michael Morrison, 27, of 181 Berkshire Road with driving under the influence, third-degree larceny of a vehicle, sixth-degree larceny, and driving with an improper license.

Police said they held Morrison on $50,000 bail for an October 6 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.

Morrison did not plead to the charges in court. He was being held on $5,000 bail on October 7 at the Bridgeport Correctional Center for an October 27 court appearance.

Attempted Burglary

Police report that while on patrol at about 6:13 pm on October 1, they spotted a man attempting to break into a town-owned locked shed near the municipal athletic fields complex off Elm Drive, so they stopped to investigate.

Police said they charged Maximilian Rojo, 27, of 27 Mountain Manor Road, with attempted third-degree burglary and with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Following arrest processing, police released Rojo on $1,000 nonsurety bail for an October 16 court appearance.

Dodgingtown Theft

Sometime overnight on October 1–2, an unknown person entered an unsecured motor vehicle that was parked in a residential area near the intersection of Flat Swamp Road and Hunting Ridge Road, police said.

The intruder then stole several electronic items that had been left inside the vehicle, police said.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Police urge that residents not leave any valuables in unattended vehicles. Police also urge that residents keep their vehicles locked at night to deter theft.

Van Accident

At about 9 am on October 1, motorist Michael Mauriello, 37, of East Haven was driving a 1994 Ford F-250 van northward near 87 South Main Street, when he veered to the right to avoid a stopped vehicle, but became involved in an accident, according to police.

Mauriello was not injured. Police said they issued Mauriello a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Currituck Crash

Motorist Ronald Griffin, 50, of Woodbridge, who was driving a 2002 GMC Savannah van northward on Currituck Road at about 8:12 am on September 30, stopped in preparing to turn left onto Curry Drive, but was then struck from behind by northbound motorist Brett Southland, 32, of Danbury, who was driving a 2009 Hyundai Accent auto, police said.

There were no injuries. Southland received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police.

Intersection Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Hawleyville Road about 8:37 pm on September 29, according to police.

Police report that the accident involved motorist Paige Peck, 16, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2011 Subaru Legacy sedan, and motorist Michael Toll, 59, of 4 Pocono Road, who was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Passat sedan.

There were no injuries. There was no enforcement. Police said that neither fault for the collision nor any motor vehicle violations could be determined.

Sandy Hook Accident

A two-vehicle accident occurred about 4:47 pm on September 29 at the intersection of Bennetts Bridge Road and Beckett Village Road.

Police said that motorist Michelle Dutsar, 48, of 5 Founders Lane was driving a 2002 Toyota Sienna minivan southward on Bennetts Bridge Road, as motorist Sazo Ajdinoski, 42, of 74 Currituck Road was driving a 2002 Dodge 2500 pickup truck eastward on Beckett Village Road.

The Dodge then failed to yield for a stop sign and the Dodge and the Toyota collided at the intersection, police said.

There were no injuries. Ajdinoski received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, police said.

Botsford Mishap

At about 3:50 pm on September 30, motorist Celeste Vodola, 50, of 9 Meadow Woods Lane, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet SUV northward on Botsford Hill Road and then stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Little Brook Lane, police report.

Northbound motorist Jose Sanchez, 44, of Danbury, who was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima sedan northward, then struck the rear end of the SUV, police said.

There were no injuries. Sanchez received an infraction for following too closely, police report.

Hyundai Vs Subaru

Police report that at about 7:13 pm on October 1, motorist Tunde Cseh, 54, of 21 Pine Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 2004 Subaru Outback station wagon southward on Main Street, planned to continue traveling southward on South Main Street, as motorist Jeri Draper, 16, of 9 King Street was driving a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV northward on South Main Street.

The Hyundai then attempted to turn left onto westbound Sugar Street, resulting in the Hyundai and Subaru colliding in the intersection, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the accident, police said. Draper received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

Rear-Ender

Motorist Heather Kuhn, 38, Shelton was driving a 2011 Hyundai Elantra sedan southward on South Main Street and then stopped and signaled to make a left turn onto Prospect Drive at about 5:23 pm on October 1, after which southbound motorist Amanda Bunting, 49, of Thomaston, who was driving a 2013 Nissan Altima sedan, struck the rear end of the Hyundai, police said.

Bunting reported pain and an ambulance crew responded to the scene, but she refused medical transport, police said. Bunting received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police report.

Berkshire Accident

At about 3:12 pm on September 26, motorist Diane Dasilva, 42, of 14 Leopard Drive, was driving a 2011 Subaru Outback station wagon eastward near 42 Berkshire Road, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Rui Ventura, 31, of Monroe, who was driving a 2001 Ford F-350 pickup truck, police said.

There were no injuries. Ventura received a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

Warrant Case

Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for him, Jacob Browning, 23, of 3 Cold Spring Road turned himself over to police at the police station on the afternoon of October 1 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court.

The charge stems from an unspecified past incident. Police said they released Browning on $500 bail for an October 15 court appearance.

Interstate Crash

State police report a two-vehicle accident in slow-moving, heavy traffic on eastbound Interstate 84, about 1,000 feet west of Exit 11, about 4 pm on October 3.

In that incident, motorist Jessica Ruggeri, 30, of Downers Grove, Ill., who was driving a 2015 Ford Focus, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Jenny Quilligana-Condo, 34, of Danbury, who was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox SUV, state police said.

There were no injuries. State police said Quilligana-Condo received an infraction for following too closely and for driving without a license.

SUV Rollover

At about 5 am on October 7, motorist Mano Guaman, 35, of Little Brook Lane was driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV northward on a wet South Main Street near its intersection with Greenbriar Lane, when the vehicle went out of control and then went off the left side of the road, rolling over and landing near a drainage structure, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Guaman a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Berkshire Road

Police report that motorist Sean Murphy, 45, of 15 Turkey Roost Road was driving a 2013 Honda Civic sedan eastward near 329 Berkshire Road about 7:16 pm on October 5, when a deer ran out of the woods and onto the road, resulting in a collision. There were no injuries. There was no enforcement.

Hatchback Vs Motor Scooter

At about 2:09 pm on October 7, motorist Christian Soderquist, 18, of 7 Oak Drive, who was driving a 2007 Nissan Versa hatchback, was attempting to exit a parking lot at 105 Church Hill Road and make a left turn onto westbound Church Hill Road, police said.

At that time, Jacob George, Jr, 17, of 76 Church Hill Road was riding a 2004 Vento Zip R-3 motor scooter eastward on Church Hill Road, police said.

The two vehicles collided. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported George to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. The accident is under investigation, police said.

Infiniti Vs Toyota

Police report that motorist Lo Ruefenacht, 52, of 10 Charter Ridge Drive was driving a 2011 Toyota Highlander SUV northward on Hawleyville Road at the Exit 9 interchange for Interstate 84 at about 2:47 pm on October 7, when the Toyota was struck by a 2008 Infiniti FX-35 SUV driven by Jonathan Lombardo, 41, of Southbury, who was attempting to enter the eastbound I-84 on-ramp.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Lombardo an infraction for a vehicular violation.

Wasserman Way

A two-vehicle accident occurred on eastbound Wasserman Way near the Exit 11 interchange for Interstate 84 about 3:15 pm on October 3.

Police said motorist Anna Lawlor, 41, of 23 Timber Mill Road, who was driving a 2013 Chrysler Town & Country minivan, struck the rear end of a 2010 Subaru Impreza sedan driven by Colleen Murphy, 24, of 37 Great Ring Road.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Lawlor for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

 

DUI Charge

Police report they responded to a complaint about 6 pm on October 7 at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street about the driver of white pickup truck located near a package store there possibly being intoxicated.

Police said they spoke to pickup truck driver Josephine Cappiali, 44, of Monroe, after which they charged her with driving under the influence.

After processing, police released Cappiali on $500 bail for an October 21 court appearance.

DUI Accident

At about 9:30 pm on October 7, police responded to the area of 18 Riverside Road concerning a minor two-vehicle accident that had occurred in which one of the drivers had left the scene.

In that accident, a 2010 Toyota Camry sedan driven by Jeffrey Levasseur, 27, of 2 Elana Lane, came into contact with a 2006 Honda Odyssey minivan driven by a local person, police said.

Police said they located Levasseur at his home and investigated, charging him with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, and failure to drive to the right. Police released Levasseur on $500 bail for an October 21 court appearance.

Church Hill Road

At about 5:45 pm on October 1, motorist Susan Chapin, 51, of 199 Walnut Tee Hill Road, who was driving a 2003 Ford Explorer SUV, struck motorist D. Rosario, 68, of Tarpon Springs, Fla., who was driving a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV, police said.

When that collision occurred, the Ford was attempting to make a left turn to enter the driveway at 66 Church Hill Road, police said. There were no injuries. Police said Chapin received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Mt Nebo Road

Police report that Robin Hood, 47, of Dusty Lane was driving a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country minivan near 48 Mt Nebo Road about 1:43 pm on October 3, when a dog entered the road, resulting in a collision.

The dog was transported to a veterinarian for medical care, police said. The unidentified dog’s owner received an infraction for allowing a dog to roam and for failure to license a dog, police said.

About 1:49 pm on Monday, October 6, Newtown Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to a brush fire that occurred in windy conditions alongside the westbound off-ramp for Interstate 84 at Exit 9 in Hawleyville. Hook & Ladder Chief Ray Corbo, who was incident commander, said that about 2,000 square feet of brush was charred by the fire. Firefighters used about 400 gallons of water to put out the blaze. State police helped fight the fire. The off-ramp was closed to traffic while firefighting was underway. There were no injuries. 
Newtown Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to a car fire about 5:25 pm on Monday, October 6, on westbound Interstate 84, just east of the Parmalee Hill Road overpass. Hook & Ladder Chief Ray Corbo, who was incident commander, said the engine compartment of a Toyota Camry sedan caught fire due to a possible equipment malfunction. The unidentified man who was driving the auto escaped injury, but the vehicle was destroyed. The incident caused extensive traffic backups on westbound I-84 during the evening rush. Sandy Hook Firefighters Karin Halstead, left, and Archie Paloian were among those who responded to the scene Monday afternoon.            
Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to a one-car accident about 1:47 pm on Tuesday, October 7, on eastbound Interstate 84, about 2,000 feet west of the Schoolhouse Hill Road overpass. State police did not immediately have details on the incident. In the crash, the sedan drove off the right road shoulder, rolled over at least once, and then struck a tree head-on, coming to rest on its wheels. The unidentified driver and passenger both were able to get out of the auto by themselves. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both people to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. The incident caused extensive travel delays on eastbound I-84.
