UUCD Project Will Help Stamp Out Hunger

DANBURY — The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury (UUCD) has for the past few months been participating in The Empty Bowls Project, an international, grassroots, craftsman-based effort to fight hunger while raising awareness of families who experience hunger.

During July and August, members and friends of UUCD, along with participants of the Association of Religious Communities (ARC) Peace Camp had an opportunity to create ceramic bowls, paint them and have them glazed. Over 100 unique bowls were created. In September members of the church participated in the 23rd annual celebration of A Taste of Greater Danbury.

Now the church is preparing for its next event, a dinner at UUCD where the public will share a meal of homemade soup and bread in exchange for a suggested donation of $10. Guests will keep the ceramic bowl they eat from, and know that 100 percent of the monies raised will be donated to ARC’s Emergency Aid Network.

The dinner will be served on World Hunger Day — Friday, October 16 — at 6 pm at the UUCD Fellowship Hall, 24 Clapboard Ridge Road. The bowls taken home will served as a reminder of the meal’s purpose: that each time the empty bowl is taken out of a the cupboard, they will be a reminder that someone’s bowl is always empty and that at least once you helped to alleviate hunger.

It is UUCD’s goal to raise as much money as possible to feed hungry people in the community and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist.
