The Wisdom Of Newtown’s Open Space Program

To the Editor:

The biggest changes in Newtown during the 50 years I have been here are more people and fewer farms and cows.

Fortunately, our town officials had the wisdom to develop the open space program and to use funds and grants for critical acquisitions, such as the development rights and conservation easements on the 74-acre Ferris Farm. This scenic area is now preserved for future generations and ensures that the last active dairy farm in Fairfield County can continue to operate. Zoning was then amended to enable that farm to operate an ice cream shop that people travel from distances to patronize. And with the town purchase of Eichler’s Cove, we finally have public access to Lake Zoar.

Equally important is the logic that land purchased by the town will not see residential development that increases taxes by increasing the school population. The large parcels acquired by the town over the past several years will have that effect, as well as preserving the look of Newtown, which enhances the value of our homes, as does a quality school system.

I am running for election to the Legislative Council in District 1. If elected, I would work to keep this program in place should the few current council members who have been critical of this use of funds attempt to divert them elsewhere.

My husband and I are proud of our hometown and thank all those who have worked to make it a great place to live and raise our own family.
