A Call For Immediate Charter

Revision

To the Editor:

The next Legislative Council that is elected needs to immediately call for a charter revision. In the revision, there are two important components necessary which would enable our town to operate within the 21st Century parameters.

1. In any future municipal election, no defeated first selectman candidate will be allowed to earn a seat on the Board of Selectman.

2. Future budget referendums will be separated into education and municipal. If elected to the Legislative Council in District 1, I will promote this agenda, and I would encourage my fellow council members to see the logic and rationale in such persuasion.

As a registered Republican and an IPN candidate for LC, District 1, I plan to represent the constituents and will consistently communicate what is actually transpiring at the LC meetings. In addition to providing more information electronically, I would also offer concise updates via the Internet and with letters to the editor. No taxpayer should be obligated to attend a meeting in person to be aware of important issues facing Newtown. Residents should not be referred to the terse meeting minutes to decipher what transpires at these meetings in order to figure out if their LC representative is acting in their best interest.

IPN candidates are truly representative of our neighbors. We have no hidden agenda. We have no financial link to Newtown that benefits any of us, or our families. Our livelihoods and that of our families are not dependent on any maneuverings of town government. We do, however, have the same investment in Newtown as everyone else. We want to preserve Newtown’s reputation as being one of the best places to live. We are interested in improved quality of life culturally, educationally, and financially while being satisfied with what one is receiving for our hard-earned tax dollars. This is not a new, novel idea contrived for election year politics, but a basic tenet of our platform.

If, like so many neighbors, you believe the integrity of our town boards, the right economic development, and our infrastructure has room for improvement, then I urge you to choose the IPN slate of candidates on November 3. It is time to part with the old ways and elect new leadership. Please visit www.ipn2009.org for a complete list of candidates, documents containing actual minutes of board meetings (complete truths), and the information necessary to make an informed decision about Newtown’s future.

Sincerely,

Robert Hennessey
