Swim Team Beats New Fairfield And Loses Close One To Panthers
Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team defeated host New Fairfield 101-80, on October 2, and the Nighthawks fell 92-89 to the visiting Pomperaug Panthers of Southbury on October 6.
Newtown’s top results from each event in the New Fairfield meet are as follows:
200 yard medley relay: 1. Meg Olszewski, Maddie Carter, Casey Klein, and Mary Hufziger 2:02.32.
200 freestyle: 2. Bridget Duero, 2:01.48. 3. Kristina Goeree 2:20.94.

50 freestyle: 1. Hufziger 26.17. 3. Gianna Terracino 28.40.

With the win locked up, the Nighthawks exhibitioned the final two events, the 100 breaststroke and 400 free relay.

Despite coming up a bit short against Pomperaug, the Nighthawks impressed their coach, Zach Gauvin.
“I thought the girls swam really well against one of the best teams in the state in Pomperaug. We’ve been training really hard lately and I thought the girls might be swimming tired, but they stepped up to the plate and swam tough,” he said.
