To the Editor:

On behalf of the Jr Newtown Action Alliance, the Newtown Action Alliance and the Newtown Foundation, I would like to sincerely thank Cornelia Guest and Jessica Meller for supporting the Jr Newtown Action Alliance with the SCRABBLE Benefit Tournament held on October 5th at the Inn at Newtown.

The Jr Newtown Action Alliance was formed when many Newtown students felt compelled to take action to keep them safe from gun violence after the horrific shootings that occurred on 12/14.  These students are the next generation of leaders and voters, and they have risen up and organized like never before. They are working to transform their tragedy into positive cultural change and they have been leading a movement among their peers all across the nation-particularly peers from urban areas such as Hartford, Norwalk, Chicago, and beyond.  Teachers, law enforcement, parents and students from Texas, Colorado, Florida, Chicago, Hartford and other communities have all reached out to explore opportunities to replicate Jr Newtown Action Alliance in their own communities, and explore ways to work together to spread this amazing and important youth movement.

The Jr Newtown Action Alliance has participated and hosted PeaceJam events, traveled to Washington DC to meet with Congressional leaders and hosted the 1st Annual “Honor With Action” Youth Leadership Summit for Gun Violence Prevention where buses were sent to bring youth from Harlem and Hartford to the event.

According to Generation Progress, “On average, 33,000 Americans are killed with guns each year, and the burden of this violence falls disproportionately on young people: 54 percent of people murdered with guns in 2010 were under the age of 30. Young people are also disproportionately the perpetrators of gun violence, as weak gun laws offer easy access to guns in many parts of the country.”

We encourage Newtown students to get involved in changing the conversation and changing the culture to prevent gun violence in our nation by joining the Jr Newtown Action Alliance.  Please visit http://newtownaction.org/jrnaa for more information.
