Wrestling Team Preps For Season In Danbury Tournament
In preparation for the upcoming season, the Newtown Youth Wrestling program competed October 3 in a preseason meet at the Danbury Police Athletic League Center. Participating were wrestlers Joseph Praino, Anthony Falbo, Nick and Luca Crudo, Matt Gonzalez, Ed and Chris Lajoie, Forest Speed, Michael Garner, and Andy Hubina.
The Newtown Youth Wrestling squad competed against participants from all over Connecticut, New York and Rhode Island. The tournament is the first of five in a preseason âNutmegâ series of tournaments in which wrestlers can earn points each week to crown an overall champion in different weight and age divisions.
Now in itâs seventh season, the Newtown Youth Wrestling home is Sandy Hook Elementary School and all practices and home meets will be hosted there this season. Beginning October 18 and running until February 3, the first session will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 pm.Â
The team is open to students of all ability levels in kindergarten through eighth grade. The squad will compete in weekly matches in December and January against teams from Danbury, Bethel, New Milford, New Fairfield, Stamford, and Ridgefield. In addition, there are opportunities to participate in weekend tournaments throughout the region.
Registration is currently ongoing and can be done through the Newtown Parks and Recreation Department and online at the Recreation Department link at www.newtown-ct.gov.
