Summer’s End Celebrated With Stories From Around The World

The International Club of Newtown recently celebrated the end of summer with a cookout at the home of Ursula and Michel Dolivo. On one of those memorable, crisp, sunny, warm and unbelievably beautiful days that foreshadow the autumn to come, members learned of the travels and adventures of their friends and shared and admired photos of faraway places.

The International Club of Newtown was started as a project of the International Affairs Committee of The Junior Women’s Club of Newtown, fostered by its chairperson, Margarita Ross of Costa Rica. The first meeting was held in November 1976.

The purpose of the organization was, and is, to provide a setting in which people from an international background can find interesting social and cultural exchange and have an opportunity to meet people from other countries as well as their own. Membership eligibility is limited to persons who were born in a foreign country, are married to a foreign-born citizen, and to those who have spent considerable time in a foreign country and have learned not only the language but also absorbed the customs of that country.

The club plans a variety of social events each year, from garden parties to wine tasting, barbecues and formal dinner dances, with lectures on specific subjects and roundtable discussions on important events thrown into the mix. Ladies’ Lunches, Gents’ Lunches, and Mixed Company Dinner Dates are all in the works for the fall of 2010 and an effort is underway to present a new slate of officers for the 2011 calendar year. One of the most popular events is the International Potluck Dinner, at which all prepare and share dishes from their native lands.

The International Club of Newtown currently boasts members from Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Holland, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Philippines, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, United States, and Wales.

New members are always welcome.
