Proceeds From NSA Social Event

Will Benefit Future Newtown Students

By Sherri Smith Baggett

A beautiful fall afternoon accented the annual Harvest Wine Tasting sponsored by The Newtown Scholarship Association, which was held September 25 at Sticks and Stones Farm. The ambiance of the farm, landscaped and decorated by Annie and Tim Curry, provided a unique atmosphere lending itself to a warm and welcoming harvest tasting.

More than 100 guests gathered at the farm to sample red, white, and sparkling wines from all over the world. Sandy Hook Wine & Liquor provided the wide variety of wines that intrigued everyone’s taste buds and palates. Owner Mike Kerler and his wife Jill, along with several vineyard representatives, explained to the guests the different wines that were offered for tasting.

Guests enjoyed browsing through silent auction items while gazing at the peaceful and serene ponds and gardens. Items included baskets of fall harvest wines, floral arrangements with local restaurant gift certificates attached, books, sports memorabilia, and various other items donated by Newtown businesses. A live auction was conducted featuring a trip to ESPN in Bristol, a tour of the New York Stock Exchange, and fine dining at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant in SoHo.

Refreshments were provided by the Newtown High School Culinary Department, prepared by students, who were highly commended for their culinary talents.

Newtown Scholarship Association was established as a nonprofit organization in 1937 to promote and advance the education of secondary school graduates by providing financial assistance to promising students. The money raised from the wine tasting will help assure that a worthy Newtown student may obtain a college education. Currently, more than 60 scholarships totaling over $220,000 are awarded annually to June graduates and also continuing aid to undergraduates.
