Police Receive Award For Traffic Law Enforcement & Education

Newtown Police Department has received an award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police recognizing its efforts in traffic law enforcement and education.

The department recently received a second place award in its size category in the Connecticut Law Enforcement Challenge. The award recognizes the enforcement of traffic laws, as well as public education efforts concerning seatbelt usage, drunken driving, and speeding.

The awards program is supported by grants from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and from some private companies. In the competitive program, police departments submit for judging their awards applications which document their efforts and effectiveness in the area of traffic law enforcement.

Lieutenant George Sinko accepted the award on behalf of the police department in ceremonies held on September 23 at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. Sergeant Phil Hynes coordinated the police department’s application for the award.

Town police will continue their work to enforce traffic laws to reduce motor vehicle accidents and to improve the safety of the motoring public, according to Lt Sinko.
