Occupation: I'm retired now for several years, but I owned Kovacs Construction Corp in Danbury, which still exists. We built sewage treatment plants and pumping stations.
Occupation: Iâm retired now for several years, but I owned Kovacs Construction Corp in Danbury, which still exists. We built sewage treatment plants and pumping stations.
Family: My wife is Margaret. We have a son, Tom, married to Maureen. They live in Washington, Conn., with our 10-year-old granddaughter, Tierney. Our daughter, Wanda, has a 15-year-old daughter, Samantha, who is a sophomore at Danbury High School.
How long have you lived in Newtown? We have lived here for 35 years. We moved up here from Greenwich.
What do you like to do in your free time? I get involved in a lot of things. Iâm a member of the Newtown Lions Club, have been for 25 years. Iâm a member of the Methodist Church and am active in a lot of projects there. I also tinker with my 1949 Ford pickup truck, and I have a pretty good vegetable garden. This year I got over 200 tomatoes, so far. Between that and the eggplant, we have no more room in our freezers. I like to read, and I do genealogy. I went to Europe to try to figure a few things out.
What have you read lately? I just read a great book, The Wild Blue, by Stephen Ambrose, about World War II B-54 pilots. I was amazed to find out a lot of the pilots were only 20 or 21 years old. It highlighted George McCarthy, who was an outstanding bomber pilot. I like to read books about international intrigue, and I like James Patterson as an author.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? I have a time share in St Maarten, so weâve been going there in February for 20 years. Itâs on the Dutch side. I like that you can easily go to the French side of the island if you want the French feel, or stay on the Dutch side for a different experience. Itâs warm there when we go, and we know a lot of people there now.
What is the best thing about Newtown? Newtown still has that rural ambiance, with four âvillagesâ in it. We donât have any skyscrapers yet! I know a lot of people after 35 years, and people here are very friendly. The town itself is unique.
What changes have you noticed in town? Newtown has grown a lot, so there are a lot of new people, and more traffic.
If you could travel to the past or future, which would you choose? Iâd like to go to the past, about 100 years. Iâve been working on our genealogy. Maybe I could see what happened, and put some pieces together to help me.
Do you have a personal philosophy? Keep your nose to the grindstone. If you do nothing, nothing happens.
What makes you happiest. Spending time with my family. My family and on my wifeâs side of the family, everyone is living well and comfortably, and Iâm happy for that.
