Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ and girlsâ soccer teams have continued to have success in 2010. The boys stand at 4-2-3 following three wins and a tie during the last weekâs worth of action. Newtown blanked visiting Stratford 3-0 at Treadwell Park, on September 29, behind the scoring of Hank Helgren, Nick Barretto, and Andre Capozziello. The Nighthawks dominated control of the game with patience and the ball movement Coach Brian Neumeyer wants from his players.
âPossession was great for us. The guys knocked it around,â Neumeyer said after the win.
The Nighthawks followed up the triumph with another 3-0 win, October 2 at Holy Cross in a nonconference clash in Waterbury. Capozziello accounted for all of the scoring with a hat-trick.
In a rescheduled game at Notre Dame-Fairfield, on October 4, the Nighthawks broke out offensively with a 7-2 win. Capozziello continued his sharp shooting with two more net-finders, Barretto also scored twice, and Helgren, Travis LeBlanc, and Josh Engler notched tallies.
The Nighthawks played Masuk of Monroe to a 2-2 tie at Treadwell on October 5. Helgren and Capozziello found the net to help the Hawks to the draw.
The NHS girls remained unbeaten through their first seven contests before falling 4-0 at Masuk on October 5. The Nighthawks carried a 4-1-3 mark into Thursdayâs scheduled game at Weston (after The Bee went to press).
Newtown, this past week, beat Stratford 3-1, blanked Notre Dame 6-0, and tied Holy Cross 1-1. The girls will return home on Tuesday, October 12, when Joel Barlow of Redding visits Treadwell for a 7 pm game.
