AMERICAN, EUROPEAN MONOTYPES AT FREDERICK BAKER

avv/gs set 10/8 #714891

CHICAGO, ILL. — Frederick Baker, Inc presents an exhibition, “Monotypes of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries,” a survey of American and European monotypes on view through November. Eighty-six works are included, dating from 1880 to 2007.

A monotype is a unique work of art, in which the artist draws or paints an image on a blank surface or matrix and then prints it on a piece of paper.

Works by important Nineteenth Century Americans such as Albion H. Bicknell and Charles Alvah Walker are included, and Maurice Prendergast, America’s best-known monotype artist is represented by an early Japanese-influenced work of circa 1891–94. A rare monotype by Impressionist painter Camille Pissarro is also included.

Early Twentieth Century American artists are represented by Joseph Stella, Abraham Walkowitz, F. Luis Mora and William Gropper. Monotypes by Jacob Kainen, Wolf Kahn, Gabor Peterdi and Matt Phillips round out the contemporary aspect of the exhibition.

The exhibit is accompanied by a fully licensed catalog.
