Although they are tots and will be making their trick-or-treat rounds on Halloween with their parents present, police are impressing upon the small children who attend The Children’s Adventure Center the importance of Halloween safety.

On Friday, September 26, police Sergeant David Kullgren spoke to the members of two classes at the school, informing them about Halloween do’s and don’ts, with the aim of the children having a safe Halloween.

The sergeant spoke, while either seated on a chair or standing, with the children sitting on the floor in a circle. The tots’ teachers watched as the policeman clearly explained Halloween safety.

The children learned that almost everyone that they would come into contact with on Halloween is nice, but occasionally people play mean tricks on children on Halloween.

Using a multiple-choice format, the sergeant asked the children a series of questions about Halloween safety. He explained the correct responses to the questions.

Among the major points made by Sgt Kullgren:

*When someone gives a child candy that is not wrapped and sealed by the candy company, the child should throw away that candy.

*If one of the “treats” which a child receives has some suspicious object sticking out of it, the child’s parent should call the police.

*The safest way to go trick-or-treating is with a trusted adult.

*The best places to go trick-or-treating are in a known neighborhood and at the local mall.

Police recommend that children trick-or-treat in daylight conditions. If they go out in the dark, they should wear a light-colored costume and carry a flashlight.

October is Crime Prevention Month, according to police.

Police Patrol Sergeant David Kullgren visited the Children’s Adventure Center on September 26 to explain Halloween safety to the tots who attend the child day care center at 14 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The kids listened attentively as the sergeant explained what to do and what to avoid on Halloween.
