NHS Boys Win Brewster Bear Classic; Girls Finish Fourth

Newtown High School’s boys’ and girls’ cross country teams competed in the Brewster Bear Classic Cross Country Meet in Brewster, NY, on Saturday, October 1.

The boys’ varsity squad, led by Jake Feinstein’s first-place finish, won the team title in the Varsity I race. Newtown placed all seven of its varsity harriers in the top 15 overall finishers, including Feinstein, (1); Pat Sullivan (7); Mitchell Russo (10); Palmer Lintz (12); Dieter Gutbrod (13); Nate Steinebrey (14), and Christopher Gamble (15).

The Newtown girls took fourth and were led by Katie Burns (5), followed by Brianne Moulder (13), Erin Begg (19), Jenny vanVeen (20), Hannah Schwartz (26), Kristen DeGirolamo (29), and Reagan Cerney (32).

The junior varsity squad earned first in the JV II race and the girls JV took second overall in the only JV girls’ race.

On Tuesday, the Nighthawk squads got back to their regular season schedules. The boys defeated Immaculate of Danbury 16-42 and host Brookfield 21-34, but were topped by New Milford, 25-30 in a close meet.

Newtown took first and second with Feinstein (17:01) and Sullivan (17:15) leading the pack, but New Milford took the next five spots. Newtown’s Jordan Hensel (17:54), Gutbrod (18:11), in his second race back from injury, and Russo (18:13), finished eight-nine-ten. Lintz, Gamble, and Steinebrey rounded out the top eight among all of Newtown’s finishers, coming across in 18:40, 18:41, and 18:41 respectively. 

In the girls’ race at Brookfield, Newtown suffered its first loss, 35-22 to Immaculate, but bested Brookfield 15-50 and New Milford 25-30 to improve to 11-1.

Immaculate High had the first four finishers. Newtown’s Burns was fifth in 20:56; Moulder came in seventh in 21:31; Begg was tenth in 21:56; vanVeen was 11th in 21:59; Schwartz came in 12th in 22:06; Cerney was 16th in 22:51; and DeGirolamo came in 17th in 22:58.
