Library To Host Writing Group For Young Poets

The C.H. Booth Library Creative Writing Group for Young Adults will offer poetry this fall. The group will be under the direction of Liz Arneth, retired English teacher and Newtown resident. Library adult writer volunteer and retired school teacher Jan Bernard will assist, as will teen mentor Emily Ashbolt.

All sessions will allow time for writing and sharing poems in progress, as well as one-on-one communication between adults and young people.  Sharing is an important part of all writing groups.

The group will meet from 6 to 8 pm, on five Monday evenings: October 17, 24 and November 7, 14, and 21. There is no class on Halloween. A make-up date is scheduled for November 28, if needed. Registration is online at www.CHBoothLibrary.org.

The free program is a limit of ten students in grades 6 through 8, who love to write poetry. Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown residents and students.

This year’s “Spindrift” theme evokes the following images for leader Liz Arneth:

Spindrift

Windblown sea spray…

The colors eddy in the surf

A mélange of turquoise, silver, transparent bubbles

Airborne only to instantly vanish

As the next wave forms

To create the magic once again.

Creative Writing for Young Adults is an ongoing program at the Booth Library, funded by the Friends of the Library. Programs focused on different genres are offered during the year, including poetry in the fall; fiction in the winter; and mysteries and thrillers in the spring.

In summer there are two groups in the Writing Camp, divided by age, who write in a variety of genres.

All enthusiastic young writers are invited to participate in this opportunity to develop their style in a friendly, relaxed group setting, with guidance from experienced authors and teachers.
