Bird Courtship And Territorial Displays
The Town and Country Garden Club of Newtown will feature Polly Brody as guest speaker at their next meeting, on Wednesday, October 12, at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. Mrs Brodyâs lecture is titled âBird Courtship and Territorial Displays.â
When Mrs Brody (pictured) lived in Newtown, she served as Conservation Commission Chairman and was instrumental in preserving 790 acres of lakefront woodland then under threat of development. The area is now known as the Upper Paugussett State Forest.
Her feelings about nature and other aspects of life have been expressed in her poetry and in her books:Â Other Nations, The Burning Bush, At the Flowerâs Lip, and Stirring Shadows. She has earned several national writing awards and has twice earned The Winchell Award from the Connecticut Poetry Society besides being published in numerous other literary reviews.
The program for the garden club will involve a discussion of the reproductive behavior of birds, citing species both familiar and rare. Mrs Brody will personally illustrate the vocal and posturing displays seen in the Herring Gull.
The program is open to the public and will begin promptly at 7:30 pm. Reservations are not necessary but additional information is available from Liz Arneth, at 203-426-5359.
