About 120 motorcyclists, some with passengers onboard, took a ride through the countryside on a sunny Sunday, September 28, both enjoying the early fall weather and raising money for the Newtown Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company’s firehouse construction project.

It was the fifth time that riders had participated in the annual Fire House Motorcycle Ride.

The event started at The One-Eyed Pig, a bar/restaurant at Ricky’s Plaza at 71 South Main Street. The riders traversed roads in the region for more than an hour and then returned to the starting point for a pig roast lunch, entertainment, refreshments, and a raffle.

The fire company has been raising money to build its own new firehouse at 12 Church Hill Road, to replace the current structurally unsound town-owned firehouse at 45 Main Street which it now uses.

Hook & Ladder Fire Chief Ray Corbo said the fundraising event proved “very successful,” adding that the fire company will continue its fundraising for a firehouse construction project.

“It went very smoothly,” he said of the event.

The motorcyclists like the ride on scenic terrain, Chief Corbo said.

Emergency services personnel blocked intersections along the route, giving the riders the right of way, he said.

The fire company has a purchase option to buy three acres at 12 Church Hill Road from Trinity Episcopal Church as the site for a new firehouse, provided that it receives all required approvals for the construction project.

About 120 motorcyclists traveled southward on South Main Street approaching Ricky’s Plaza as they ended a September 28 ride through the countryside, which was a fundraiser for the Newtown Hook & Ladder firehouse construction project.
Monsignor Robert Weiss of St Rose of Lima Church, left foreground, offered a blessing to the riders before the motorcycling event began. First Selectman Pat Llodra, center, spoke to the motorcyclists, wishing them well. Newtown Hook & Ladder Fire Chief Ray Corbo, right, oversaw activities at the event.
The about 120 motorcyclists who took part in the fundraising ride revved their engines in the parking lot at Ricky’s Plaza at 71 South Main Street before the event started.
