Chris Dennis smashed three home runs and drove in eight runs last Sunday at Dickinson Park as Porcoâs Construction defeated Hurd Construction, 15-7, to capture the Newtown Sunday Slo-Pitch championship for the third time in four years.
Staring at a small window with a storm system crossing Connecticut early Sunday morning, Porcoâs went to work right away, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and five more in the bottom of the second to take a quick 8-2 lead.
Dennis belted a three-run homer in the first and then watched as Rick Kasbarian launched a solo shot. In the second, George Matern singled in a run and Dennis â with another three-run homer â again went back-to-back with Kasbarian.
That lead expanded to 11-4 by the top of the sixth, thanks to a two-run homer by Dennis, but thatâs when Hurd finally started to reach Porcoâs pitcher Gene Chappell.
Mark Fracker smashed a two-run homer while Frank Lancaster knocked in a run after three consecutive singles. Hurd â which finished second to Porcoâs in the regular season, as well â scored twice more in the top of the seventh to put within seven runs but Porcoâs added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.
The rain finally struck in the eighth inning and that put a damper on any possible rallies Hurd might have put together.
Dennis finished 3-for-3 with three home runs, three runs scored and eight RBI to lead Porcoâs. Rick Kasbarian was 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and two RBI while Chappell, George Matern, Dave Admiral (triple), Jim Tolster, Tim Zeno and Bill Kasbarian collected two hits apiece.
For Hurd, Fracker and Charlie Coates had two hits apiece with Fracker driving in three runs and Tom Wyatt driving in two runs. Coates scored three times.
