Montessori Community School Grows
BROOKFIELD â The Montessori Community School of Brookfield announces the opening of a second location at the former Datahr facility at 940 Federal Road. The 14,000 square foot facility provides additional space to house current students while also leaving room for future growth.
Since its establishment in 1995, the non-profit school has leased space at the Valley Presbyterian Church on West Whisconier Road. Learning space and facilities for the children currently utilizes all of the available area. With the addition of the Federal Road site, the church site has become home to an expanded âChildrenâs Houseâ which serves children aged 2 to 6. The elementary class, which includes children from ages 6 to 11, has moved into the new building along with a second âChildrenâs House.â A committee of enthusiastic parents is busy preparing ideas for using the extra space.
Securing the new space is the result of a search by the schoolâs board members that began in 1996. âI am excited about the new site and all it has to offer,â says director Deborah Laemmerhirt. âWe are looking forward to continuing our vision of school curriculum growth and development.â
Physician, psychiatrist, and educator Maria Montessori developed the Montessori learning method in the early 1900s. The Montessori classroom is a prepared learning environment that utilizes unique teaching materials designed by Dr Montessori. Most activities are done individually, so that children can move at their own pace. Thus, many levels of ability can be accommodated within one class. Mastery of an activity leads to more complex materials. Students move from the Childrenâs House to the elementary class according to their social and emotional development.
