Formula Estimates Risk Of [/naviga:h2]

Breast Cancer For Women

FARMINGTON - Post-menopausal women can discover their estimated chances of developing breast cancer within the next five years or before the age of 90, using a free risk-assessment tool offered by breast health specialists at the University of Connecticut Health Center.

The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool is a computer program that calculates risk-estimates based on six risk factors statistically associated with breast cancer. It is being used in conjunction with a far-reaching national trial of two drugs that have been linked to breast cancer prevention, tamoxifen and raloxifene.

“Post-menopausal women with higher statistical risks for breast cancer may be eligible to participate in the Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene (STAR),” said health center specialist Scott H. Kurtzman, MD.

The Health Center is one of several Connecticut sites participating in the STAR study, organized by the National Cancer Institute and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project. (Others in southwestern Connecticut include Yale-New Haven Hospital, St Raphael in New Haven, Charlotte-Hungerford, and Stamford Hospital.)

To qualify for the STAR trial, women must be post-menopausal, over 35, and without any prior history of blood clots, stroke or breast cancer, among other criteria.

“It’s important to remember that the estimated risk is a mathematical guess -- not a foolproof number. However, if the data indicate a higher risk, it can help women and healthcare providers make decisions such as participation in STAR or other trials, aggressive screening schedules, and more," Dr Kurtzman added.

The Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Tool computes estimates based on the following six factors: age at first menstrual period; age at first live birth; incidence of breast cancer among first-degree relatives (sisters, mothers, daughters); history of breast biopsies; and race.

Post-menopausal women who think they may meet the criteria and may be interested in participating in the STAR trial can call Susan Walters, RN, for a free risk assessment at 860/679-3509.
