Cooking The Colonial Way,
Sunday At The Curtiss House
The massive central fireplace in Newtown Historical Societyâs 18th Century Matthew Curtiss House will be the site of much activity on Sunday, October 10, from 1 to 4 pm. During a free public open house, costumed docents will prepare an authentic Colonial meal over the buildingâs open hearth.
The Curtiss House is well equipped with authentic early kitchen tools, and their uses will be explained and demonstrated. Onlookers are welcome to ask questions of the docents as they prepare roasted chicken, carrot pudding, apple and quince pie among other delights. Each recipe will be created from scratch.
Costumed guides will escort guests through the Matthew Curtiss House, sharing stories about daily life in early Newtown and information about the 18th Century house-museum. A special grouping of small and curious objects from the societyâs collections will be labeled and displayed in the exhibit room.
The October 10 demonstration concludes the societyâs âLiving Historyâ series for this year which has included events such as blacksmithing demonstrations, an antique tractor display on Main Street, and heritage crafts demonstrations. The series will continue in the spring with new topics to be covered.
The Matthew Curtiss House is at 44 Main Street in Newtown. Call the Newtown Historical Society at 203/426-5937 for more information.
