Host Nighthawks Swim Past New Milford Green Wave
Newtown High School's girls' swimming and diving team defeated the visiting New Milford Green Wave on October 3.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Mary Hufziger, Maddie Carter, Olivia Renkert, and Caroline Mahoney was first in 2:01.58.
In the 200 yard freestyle event, Martha Seaver was runner-up in 2:17.53. Carter gave Newtown another second-place finish, in the 200 individual medley, clocking in at 2:24.46.
Hufziger won the 50 free, narrowly edging out Renkert as the Nighthawks recorded a one-two finish with times of 26.03 and 27.38.
Kiera Sughrue was first in the diving competition with a score of 189.6, and Hannah Weatherby was second with a score of 182.75.
Out of the diving break, the Nighthawks held a 52-26 lead and added to it with a strong performance in the 100 butterfly race, led by first-place finisher Hufziger, in 1:03.19; Julia DiMartino was second in 1:12.69.
Renkert won the 100 free, making her final touch in 1:01.58. Grace Bertsche was second in the 500, finishing in 6:08.01.
The 200 free relay team of Emma Riebe, Renkert, Lianna Perazzo, and Carter was first in 1:54.20 and Newtown sealed the team victory, seizing a 93-47 lead.
In the 100 backstroke race, which Newtown exhibitioned, Mahoney and Riebe had the fastest two times with a very close finish of 1:10.64 and 1:10.99.
Carter had the best time in the 100 backstroke event in 1:16.26, and Emmi DeSousa followed in 1:19.01.
The 400 relay team of DiMartino, Mahoney, Riebe, and Hufziger clocked in with the fastest time of 4:12.75.
