Special Screening Of

‘Death In The Family’

DANBURY — Two sisters’ grief over losing their mother to breast cancer is cut short when their father brings home an old girlfriend —  with the same name as the mother — is the story told in Luchina Fisher’s award-winning 15-minute narrative short film Death in The Family.

The film, based on real events by its writer-director, a New Fairfield resident, won the Silver Award at the 2012 Philadelphia International Film Festival. It was also an official selection for the 2012 Litchfield Hills Film Festival and the 2012 Harlem International Film Festival.

Shot in Harlem, New York, the film has already sparked a conversation about how we grieve and talk about death and dying. It stars Victoria Rowell, April Betts, J. Leon Pridgen and Alexis Donovan.

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury, at 24 Clapboard Ridge Road, will host a special screening of the film on Saturday, October 13, at 7 pm. Ms Fisher, a member of the UUCD community, will screen the film at the UUCD Fellowship Hall, followed by a Q&A and light refreshments.

Suggested donation is $10 and all proceeds will go to UUCD.

“I guess you could say this film has been 25 years in the making. Long before pink ribbons and breast cancer runs, when bone marrow treatments were still considered experimental, my mother died of breast cancer at age 45,” said Ms Fisher. “My sister and I were teenagers.

“Days after the funeral, my father, a proud Army man, started a relationship with another woman. The compound effect of this was devastating,” she continued.
