What's In A Name?
Whatâs In A Name?
To the Editor:
It appears evident that Newtowners are very divided on the issue of having a âNewtown Town Hallâ on the Fairfield Hills property. It also appears that these two lines are divided by necessity and nostalgia. Our town has grown considerably and continues to grow since Mary Hawley donated our Edmond Town Hall. Our administrators and the staff need considerably more space to do their jobs properly. I believe that anyone who has taken the time to actually look inside their offices would have to agree.
However, Main Street is our street and the Edmond Town Hall is our town hall! Its history and its beauty, both inside and out, can be compared to some of the most beautiful buildings most of us have ever seen.
The Alexandria Room, the theater, and the full gymnasium are an integral part of all that is Newtown. The majesty of that building and the functionality of those three venues are priceless.
Move the administrative offices to Fairfield Hills and acquire all the space that is needed. However, do not name it the Newtown Town Hall. We have our town hall and it is on Main Street. Name the new building the Newtown Municipal Building or the Newtown Administrative Building.
Whatâs in a name? I think the answer is plenty!
Sincerely,
