Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*POT LUCK DINNER will be Tuesday, October 9, from 4 to 6:30 pm; $5 per person.

*Make a FALL CRAFT scarecrow on October 9 at 1 pm.

*BINGO: October 10

*JERRY KING LIVE presents a Cole Porter Review Thursday, October 11, at 1 pm, at the Senior Center.

*Depart at 7:30 am, Thursday, October 11, for ADAMS FARM & APPLES in Southern Vermont. Enjoy the foliage, the Barn Theater, a comfortable wagon ride, lunch at the Old Red Mill Tavern, and The Apple Barn; $85 per person.

*RICHARD CLARK performs a solo show of the incredible Andrew Carnegie, Tuesday, October 16, at 1 pm, at the Senior Center.

*BINGO: October 17, and 31. Wear your Halloween costume on October 31.

*ANNUAL FLU SHOT CLINIC by appointment only on Tuesday, October 23, 10 am to noon, and November 8, 9 am to noon. Call 270-4310.

*OKTOBERFEST with ACE IN THE HOLE on October 24. Depart at 9:30 am for a day of music, song, dance, food and drink.

*More music entertainment with BILL MICHAELS on October 25 at 1 pm.

*ANNUAL HARVEST BAZAAR Friday, October 26, from 10 am to 4 pm, and Saturday, October 27, from 10 am to 3 pm.

*BUS TRIP TO FOXWOODS on November 1. Bus leaves center at 8 am; $27.

*A refresher course with AARP DRIVING on Monday and Tuesday, November 5–6, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both days. The fee is $10.

Day Trips

*OKTOBERFEST with Ace In The Hole on Wednesday, October 24. A day of music, song, dance, food and drink. Depart at 9:30 am; $79 per person.

*THE ROCKETTES at Radio City Music Hall on Friday, November 9 is sold out.

*Viva Las Vegas!! AT THE AQUA TURF CLUB on Tuesday, November 13. Enjoy a day filled with food, entertainment, games and prizes. Depart at 10 am; cost is $67.

*Visit Broadway and see JERSEY BOYS and have lunch at Oscar’s at the famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wednesday, December 5. Depart the Senior Center at 9:15 am; cost is $193 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

October 8–12

Reservations must be made 3 days in advance.

Monday: October 8: Columbus Day, closed

Tuesday: October 9: Minestrone soup with crackers, cold cut grinder with turkey, salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato & mayonnaise, coleslaw vinaigrette, Bartlett pears.

Wednesday: Cheese stuffed shells, sausage, fresh zucchini, parmesan cheese, Italian bread, chocolate chip cookie, cranberry juice.

Thursday: Oven fried chicken, macaroni & cheese, garden peas, warm buttermilk biscuit, seasonal fresh fruit.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: October 15: Honey roasted chicken, rice pilaf, Oriental blend vegetables, potato bread, marble cake.

Tuesday: October 16: Swedish meatballs over egg noodles, cut green beans, wheat dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit, pineapple juice.
