During a sobriety checkpoint held on South Main Street (Route 25) last weekend, police arrested one motorist on a charge of driving under the influence, and issued many infractions and warnings for various motor vehicle violations.

Police held the checkpoint during the night of Friday, September 28, and early morning hours of Saturday, September 29, on the section of South Main Street lying between its southern intersection with Peck’s Lane and its intersection with Ethan Allen Road.

Eight police officers and one supervisor stopped an estimated 1,200 drivers who passed through the area to check whether the drivers had used alcohol and/or drugs before driving.

Police said that at about 8:30 pm September 28, they stopped motorist Mark R. Russo, 43, of Stamford and gave him field sobriety tests, after which they charged him with driving under the influence.

Following arrest processing, Russo posted $100 bail and was released for an October 12 court appearance, police said.

Also, during the checkpoint, police issued motorists three infraction tickets for driving an unregistered vehicle, handed out four infractions for driving without a license, and issued two other unspecified infractions.

Police issued a written warning to one driver for an automotive window tinting violation. Additionally, police made 67 verbal warnings to drivers for various offenses.

At the checkpoint, police had six vehicles towed away for various violations.

The checkpoint was the fourth such event that police have conducted during the past several months.

Highway safety grant money covers 75 percent of the police overtime costs involved in staging such checkpoints.
