Dialogue With The Docs: Menopause &

Breast Cancer Programs Planned

 SOUTHBURY — “Dialogue with the Docs,” a program sponsored by Brownstein Jewish Family Service, resumes this fall with two talks in October especially geared toward women. Dr Melissa Pearlstone, an obstetrician-gynecologist at the Gyn Center for Women’s Health in Waterbury, will open the new season with a talk on “Making Your Way Through Menopause: What Every Woman Needs to Know” Tuesday, October 9, at 4 pm. She will present a review of the latest scientific information on menopause, discuss strategies for treating hot flashes and insomnia, and talk about sexual dysfunction and osteoporosis.

Women of all ages are encouraged to come to this presentation and ask questions.

The free programs are open to the public and take place at the Walzer Family Jewish Community Campus, 444 Main Street North.

Dr Pearlstone is a graduate of the New York University School of Medicine. Prior to coming to Waterbury, she was in private practice in Greenville, S.C. She also served as a staff physician at MacGregor Medical Center in Houston, and was a Clinical Instructor at SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

“Advances in Breast Cancer Treatment” with Dr Beth Overmoyer will take place Tuesday, October 16, at 4 pm. Dr Overmoyer will discuss new therapeutics including angiogenesis inhibitors (Avastin, Pazopanib) and drugs that target HER 2 neu (Lapatinib, Herceptin), and sequencing of treatment for estrogen modulated disease.

Dr Overmoyer, MD, FACP, completed her medical school training at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She became the director of breast cancer at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, then expanded her focus on research and became the director of clinical research in breast cancer at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at University Hospitals of Cleveland.

As an assistant professor of medicine, Dr Overmoyer obtained funding for clinical trial investigation and translational research from the National Institutes of Health, Avon Foundation, and the American Cancer Foundation. Dr Overmoyer has authored many articles, has presented research at national and international meetings, and has been chosen as one of Cleveland’s, Northeast Ohio’s, and America’s Best Doctors.

Dr Overmoyer recently joined the Connecticut Oncology/Hematology group, which is a member of US Oncology, and primarily practices at New Milford Hospital Cancer Center.
