Edward J. Wencek

Edward J. Wencek, 74, died September 29 at home after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Marion (Daniel) Wencek.

Mr Wencek was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. August 15, 1925, son of the late Mathais and Kazmiera Wencek. He moved with his family from Brooklyn to Newtown in 1968.

Mr Wencek attended Don Bosco Prep in Ramsey, N.J., before enlisting in the Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and was discharged following the war. He returned to complete his education at St. John’s University and St Peter’s College in N.Y. In his early career he was a radio announcer and founded and managed a talent agency before beginning employment with American Electric Power. He later worked for and retired from the American Standard Corporation, where he was employed in Stock Services, and was the corporate historian.

He was active in the Newtown Republican Party, had been an officer of the American Records Management Association, and for many years was active as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader. He delighted in his portrayal of Father Christmas each year.

Mr Wencek is survived by his two sons, Gregory Wencek and his wife, Stacey, of Danbury and Martin Wencek and his wife, Clare, of South Kingston, R.I.; his sister, Diane (Wencek) Pratomo and her husband, Mas Pratomo, of Queens, N.Y.; four grandchildren; and four nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Saint Mary’s Church Parish, 237 Greenwood Avenue; or Bethel VNA, One School Street, Bethel, CT 06801.

The funeral was conducted from the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, October 2 with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St Mary Church, Bethel. Burial was in St Mary Cemetery, Bethel.
