AA BOOK REVIEW: The Official Price Guide To Collectibles, Second Edition, by
Harry L. Rinker; The Ballantine Publishing Group, New York, 1998. 438 pages,
$19.95 paperback.
By Justine Hammond
Before you decide to throw anything out of your attic, garage or child's
playroom, or your own toy collection, take a look through this price guide,
and make sure what you discard really isn't worth two or three hundred dollars
or even more.
Items you never would have thought would be worth anything, let alone being
collectibles, just might be in this book. The guide covers over 425 areas of
collectibles, organizing them in a manor that allows quick reference and
prices. There is a brief description of each category giving the reader some
information about the item itself. The book then lists the item's origin,
when, where and by whom it was manufactured, and also some clubs and
references where one might research that particular piece.
Even if you have already been collecting for years and know the business, you
still might want to pick up a copy of this guide to refresh your memory. It's
something to take along to shows as a reference to help price out the
merchandise.
Besides giving good information it is interesting to see what is being paid
for certain "collectibles" these days. Practically all you have to do is say
the word and people come running.
There seems to be a desperate market for collectibles, as people are trying to
get their hands on anything made before the turn of the century. This guide
will bring people up to date on current collectibles and what they are worth.
Harry Rinker has been in the collectible business for many years and is an
authority on the field. He is also a well respected editor and author of a
number of other books.
